Psychology Student Awarded Prize at British Psychological Society Conference

Hayley Bartlett, a Final Year Psychology student was awarded 3rd prize at the 40th British Psychological Society Welsh Branch Annual Student Conference. At the conference, held on Saturday 26th March 2011 at Swansea Metropolitan University, final year undergraduate students were given the opportunity to present their work to peers. The conference attracts students from universities across Wales and received over 60 presentations.

Art to celebrate World Autism Day

Foundation Art and Design staff from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences have been putting their creative skills to good use in the community through a month-long collaborative art project with Beechwood College (Wales’ only specialist residential college of Further Education dedicated to students over the age of 16 years with an Autism Spectrum Disorder or Asperger’s Syndrome) in Sully, South Wales. The project was fully funded by the Strategic Insight Programme which aims to help university staff develop and build relationships and promote knowledge transfer with external partner organisations

Creative Writing Anthology Launched

Glamorgan’s 11th annual Creative Writing anthology Daps was launched on Tuesday 22nd April. The launch took place in Cables Bar at the new Students Union, Treforest Campus. Daps is a compilation of students work and consists of Fiction, Non-Fiction and Poetry. It is entirely student run and is intended for a wide ranging audience. Glamorgan Tutors and published authors Chris Meredith, Catherine Merriman and Jane Aaron were amongst those who attended the event.

Sport Psychologist gives S4/C presenter the mental edge for Arctic Circle challenge

Ross Hall, Principal Lecturer in Sport Psychology, will be appearing on the new series of Ras yn Erbyn Amser on S4/C this month. The award leader for Glamorgan’s BSc (Hons) Sport Psychology degree was recently interviewed by S4/C on the psychological preparations required for competing in the 6633 Extreme Winter Ultra Marathon. Ross has been working with S4/C presenter and adrenaline junkie, Lowri Morgan, as she prepared to take part in the Arctic race in March 2011. Ross also worked with Lowri in the lead up to her Amazon Jungle race in 2010.

English Professor nominated for Gothic literary prize

Two books written by Glamorgan Professor Andy Smith have been nominated for an international prize for gothic criticism. The Allan Lloyd Smith Memorial Prize will be awarded for a scholarly publication published between 2009 and 2011 that is considered to have advanced the field of Gothic studies. Nominations for the prize were made by members of the International Gothic Association (IGA). The IGA is the world’s leading association dedicated to the study of the Gothic, consisting of over 200 researchers from 25 countries.

Time and Tide – Michael Freeman at 75 (Paintings: 1958-2010)

You are invited to view Time and Tide – Michael Freeman at 75 (Paintings: 1958-2010), a retrospective, solo exhibition of fifty works to mark the artist’s 75th birthday.
Freeman was born in Swansea in 1936 and lives and paints there. He studied at Swansea College of Art 1955-59 and has exhibited in and outside Wales for over forty years. The sources of inspiration for his inner-eye images include the sea and the coast, especially around Gower, and the international world of classical, orchestral music.
